Backroad`s `Italian Indulgence`
Discover cities that have shaped the world`s culture. Regional flavours and renowned wines, celebrated around the globe. And picture-perfect landscapes that will capture your imagination and stay in your heart. Exploring Italy is truly an experience to be savoured.

They say all roads lead to Rome, but after we meet, our route whisks us away to awe-inspiring Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis. Tonight, we come together for a delicious dinner in Perugia. (D)

Introducing Siena: a gorgeous Gothic city bursting with fabulous architecture. After exploring the old centre, we venture to our villa in the world-renowned Chianti region. (B,D).

Our host lets us in on a few secrets of Italian cooking today, as we prepare ourselves a classic rustic Tuscan lunch. Later, the afternoon is free to relax. (B,L,D)

We turn our attention to Florence – birthplace of the Renaissance and home to the world’s most treasured masterpieces. A local guide brings the city alive as we stroll through the streets on a walking tour. As afternoon melts into dusk, we continue on to Lucca. (B)

We come up close and personal to an Italian icon today, with a visit to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Afternoon sees us back in Lucca, where you have the rest of the day and night to explore at your own pace. (B)

It`s time to experience the glitz and glamour of the Italian Riviera. Have your camera ready as we tick off Camogli, San Fruttuoso and the glittering village of Portofino, before settling in Santa Margherita Ligure. Enjoy an evening at your own pace – strolling along the beachfront, lined with pastel-painted houses. (B)

Our compass points north and we travel inland to Piedmont, a region of rich red wines and luxurious cuisine. Our first stop is Grinzane Cavour Castle for a wine tasting, before driving near the village of Barolo, where we join a truffle hunt with a local farmer. Once we have worked up an appetite, we will follow it up by a sumptuous slow-food dinner in Cherasco. (B,D)

A treat is in store for the sweet-toothed among us at a distillery near Asti, where we sip regional liquors, complemented by hand-made nougat. Then it`s time to head for the hills, pristine lakes and soaring mountains of northern Italy. Lake Maggiore marks the magnificent final stop of the day`s journey. (B)

Leaving dry land behind us for the day, we set sail for the Borromean Islands. We wander the terraces of the ornate Baroque Garden on Isola Bella and discover the pretty harbour of Isola dei Pescatori. The rest of the day is free for you to relax. (B)

Bidding farewell to Lake Maggiore, we discover the sights of Lecco before we reach Tirano for a wine tasting session. After an indulgent afternoon, we return to our hotel and meet for dinner at a local restaurant to continue the culinary adventure. (B,D)

This morning we turn our attention to the majestic Lake Molveno at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. We continue to Trento for a walking tour and meet in the evening for a farewell dinner. (B,D)

Fair Verona beckons today, with its impressive Roman ruins and romantic hotspots. Then it`s onwards to the show-stopping finale: the floating city of Venice where we bid farewell. (B)

Cruise Details

7 Night Cruise sailing from Rome to Cannes aboard Royal Clipper.

Inspired by the tall ship Preussen, the Royal Clipper has the proud distinction of being the largest and only five-masted full-rigged sailing ship built since her predecessor was launched at the beginning of the last century. With her complement of 42 sails, Royal Clipper is a splendid sight to behold.

You might think she was an apparition from the grand age of sail, but Royal Clipper is as new as tomorrow, boasting state-of-the-art navigation systems and every comfort and luxury one could wish for. For connoisseurs of sail cruising, the 439 foot Royal Clipper offers the ultimate sea-going experience, balancing the grandeur, adventure and tradition of sailing with the superb service, amenities and accommodations of the finest modern yacht. Royal Clipper carries just 227 guests in luxurious style. A full 19,000 square feet of open deck and three swimming pools create a wonderfully spacious and expansive outdoor environment.

Find your secret hideaway on one of the hidden balconies on either side of the bow. Or climb the mast (with safety harness provided) to one of the passenger lookout crows-nests, thoughtfully furnished with a comfortable settee, where you’ll have the grandest view of all!

Royal Clipper’s interior spaces are just as dazzling. They include a three-deck atrium that funnels sunlight into the elegantly appointed, three-level dining room featuring open-seating dining, deliciously prepared cuisine and a no-tie dress code.

A convenient marina platform lowers from the stern for watersports. And the ultimate unique Royal Clipper experience, the one-of-a-kind Captain Nemo Lounge, is the site of our spa and health club with underwater glass portholes!

Highlights of this cruise:

St. Peter's, with its breathtaking Sistine Chapel, newly restored to its former glory; the Spanish Steps, where all Rome passes by; the Colosseum, where gladiators fought to the death, and the Pantheon, considered to be the most perfect architectural statement of the ages.

Bonifacio, Corsica
Bonifacio's almost land-locked harbour is one of the most dramatic, totally protected harbours. It is a bustling port with excellent seafood restaurants, and a modern marina. The ancient citadel town is perched high atop a seemingly impenetrable cliff.

Calvi, Corsica
Napoleon once said that he could recognize his native island blindfolded because of the wonderful perfume of the maquis. Approaching by sea, it is the first thing you experience about Corsica. The second is its wild and mountainous landscape. Nearby are secluded beaches and the eerie Grottes des Veaux Marins, offering fantastic diving opportunities.

Monaco is the fabled domain of princes and movie stars. The magnificent Palais du Prince and opulent casinos remind you of an elegant, pre-war era. With more wealth concentrated in one small area than almost any place on earth, this tiny principality retains its gilt edged allure.

Glittering Cannes is the archetypal Mediterranean resort city discovered by wealthy English nobles who came to the sunny south of France to escape their drafty old castles during the dreary British winters. Cannes’ high flying lifestyle has attracted notables and the notorious ever since. Every year, the stars flock to celebrate the Cannes Film Festival at the colossal Palais des Festivals.
